National Book Award Winner & Local Author

Phillip Hoose moved to Speedway in 1955 and attended Speedway Schools. His curiosities and experiences led him towards writing 13 published titles. He is one of the only Hoosier authors to win the National Book Award, which was awarded for his book, Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice, and he was a finalist for We Were There Too!: Young People in U.S. History.
